COZIER — AND SAFER — HOLIDAYS: PREPARING YOUR HOME TO WELCOME AGING LOVED ONES

The holiday season can really sneak up on you. One moment you’re enjoying the sunshine and all the summer plans that come with it, and the next, loved ones of all ages are gathering under one roof to celebrate the winter holidays.
As you prepare to welcome your older relatives into your home, it’s important to take some time to make your space as safe and comfortable as it can be. Small, intentional home adjustments can make a real difference in the safety and care of aging loved ones, helping them feel at ease during their stay.
Create a more relaxed experience with this safety checklist
To help you approach household prep with confidence, here is a quick checklist to get started. Keep in mind that this list is not all-inclusive, so don’t hesitate to reach out to another family member who may know more about your older relative’s unique situation and needs.
- Check for fall risks
Are there rugs, wires, or loose items in or near pathways around your home? Clearing these will help your loved one move around safely.
- Adjust lighting
Increase low-glare lighting to accommodate aging eyes and shorter, darker days so your family member feels more welcome and included in all the festivities.
- Maintain a clean environment
Many seniors struggle with a weakened immune system. Ensure that your home is clean, check that guests are feeling well, and sanitize surfaces and hands regularly to help protect your loved one from illness, especially during flu season.
- Prepare for winter weather
In icy conditions, salt your steps and keep handrails accessible. Clear away snow, ice, and slippery leaves from outdoor paths to help prevent slipping. Older people are often more sensitive to cold temperatures, so keep your home at a comfortable temperature and have extra blankets on hand.
- Keep an eye on your furry friends
Your household pets are probably as excited to see your loved one as the rest of your family, but make sure your pets aren’t a tripping hazard. Consider placing your pet in a closed room or crate during larger gatherings where people are moving around a lot.
- Accommodate mobility needs
Install and secure whatever your family member needs to aid mobility (handrails, ramps, walkers, etc.) before they arrive at your house.
The impact of thoughtful home preparation
Making modifications to your home and taking the time to prepare can reduce fall risk by up to 33%1 and bring peace of mind to you and your family.
There’s nothing more valuable than time spent with loved ones. When your aging family member feels comfortable and safe, they can be present in the moment and engage more actively – and so can you.
